with Indra Kupferschmid
When choosing typefaces for digital platforms one has to keep in mind a couple of more (trickier) things than for print. Indra Kuperschmid goes beyond the (academic) basics—atmospheric values, genre and style—and talks about the day-to-day restraints and requirements: challenges related to content or production, including the hurdles of licensing fonts; cross-platform issues, as well as experiences and strategies to distinguish and assess typefaces.
Indra Kupferschmid is a freelance typographer and professor at HBKsaar, University of Arts Saarbrücken, at the German South-West border to France. Fueled by specimen books and coffee, she is occupied with type around the clock and in all its incarnations – webfonts, bitmap fonts, other fonts, type history, research, marketing, DIN committees, design work, and any combination of this. She is co-author of Helvetica Forever by Lars Müller Publishers and other typographic reference books. She consults for the type and design industry and everyone who needs help choosing fonts, writes for magazines, books, and websites/blogs, stirs up things at alphabettes.org, alongside juggling her own small and ultralarge-scale ventures.
